Ultra green workspace to attract science companies

A designer suite showcasing the latest in environmentally friendly workspace is the newest attraction at the multi-award-winning No.1 Nottingham Science Park.

Supplied and designed by leading design and fit-out company Paragon Interiors plc, the show suite reinforces the landmark building’s key features of quality, creativity and sustainability.

No.1 Nottingham Science Park is the spectacular focal point of a £50 million, 12-acre extension to Nottingham’s existing science park from specialist regeneration developer Blueprint. It offers space from 1,500 sq ft to 42,000 sq ft for knowledge-based and science and technology businesses.

The show suite is designed to underline the environmental credentials of the building itself, which sets new standards for environmentally sustainable development on UK business and science parks.

John Long, at Blueprint, explains: “To us sustainability means more than just sourcing recycled or recyclable products, that’s a given.  But it also means looking at the quality and durability of the product itself and investing in products that will reduce manufacturing in the long run. Paragon understood our principles and have created a suite that showcases sustainability in every sense of the word. We can now demonstrate genuine sustainability across the development from the biomass heating system and brown roof to the carpet and chairs.”

Paragon Interiors considered the environmental credentials of the suite from concept to completion. One in five carpet tiles was taken from excess stocks on previous projects and worked into the carpet design. A bespoke recycling bin was designed from waste signage products. All products were sourced from suppliers that could provide statements on the ethical and sustainable roots of their products.

Carpets were supplied by carbon negative manufacturers, Miliken Carpets, a company whose entire range is made to order and which reports less than one per cent wastage. The Knoll desks are LEED workplace certified, GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality certified and Forest Stewardship Council certified. All fabric and wood is 100% recycled and the aluminium products include up to 70% recycled content.

Humanscale, who supplied the chairs and other desk top equipment, are committed to creating products that use fewer parts and less manufacturing processes. They contain a high percentage of recycled and recyclable content and weigh less, requiring less raw material.

With over ten projects across the East Midlands – whether completed, underway or in the early concept stages – Blueprint is working alongside a wide range of organisations to deliver difficult mixed-use regeneration development that is environmentally, socially and commercially sustainable.

Blueprint has received a string of awards for the Nottingham Science Park development, including Developer of the Year, Design Led Project of the Year, and Sustainable Development of the Year.

Blueprint has worked with a range of partners on No.1 Nottingham Science Park - including emda, Nottingham City Council and Greater Nottingham Partnership, and the project was part financed by the European Regional Development Fund. The boardwalk was part financed by emda as public realm.
