Hosta Consulting green up Trent Basin with the design and installation of a second garden

Hosta Consulting was first approached in July 2016 to assist Nottingham Developers Blueprint Regeneration in creating a show home garden as stunning as the home’s interior. Here Claire Russell of Hosta discusses the themes and ideas behind the show garden.

Inspiration for the planting scheme and colour palette at the Trent Basin show home was derived from its contemporary architecture and urban riverside setting. The aim was to include colours that complemented the hard landscaping and the warm tones of the brickwork and windows. We also introduced a planting scheme along the border of the show home garden to continue the theme into the streetscape.

Now, a year on, as a number of buyers have moved in to Trent Basin, we were approached by one of the homeowners to design a planting scheme to add to the pre-designed garden for their new home. Inspired by the show home garden, the Trent Basin resident wanted a similar scheme; planting that gave texture and warm tones to the garden, as well as stylish planters and seating that created a focal point as well as providing a space to relax and enjoy the garden.

The planting scheme breaks up the view of the driveway using shrub planting as well as a multi-stemmed Amelanchier. Amelanchier are well suited for small gardens, providing year-round interest with blossom in spring and bright red berries in autumn, as well as staying at a manageable height.

The structural shrubs are complimented by a grass swathe of Briza media flowing through the scheme drawing the eye around the garden to blocks of Heleniums and Achilleas, which when summer is in full swing, will fill the garden with splashes of oranges and yellows. In spring, the delicate flowers of Anemones will mingle with the purple of Vinca minor, as well as the fluffy flower tops of Tirarella.

The garden is complimented by a colourful Fermob bench to make the most of the patio area and create a great social space.
