Jake builds firm foundations for career in property

Jake Stace has spent a year at Blueprint on a placement geared towards giving him hands-on experience of urban development – and as he embarks on his final weeks in the Blueprint office before returning to university, he reflects on what he’s learnt over the last 12 months.

My time at Blueprint has been priceless in terms of experience. I’m studying for a degree in Real Estate Management at Nottingham Trent University and a key part of my learning is to spend time in the industry, gaining insight into how the sector ticks and narrowing down my area of interest to a specific line of practice.

Blueprint has been a great fit for me – a city centre office filled with a team of extremely passionate people working on a wide range of exciting developments, from the Fruit Market in Sneinton to Trent Basin on the banks of the River Trent.

My experience over the last year has been so wide ranging. I’ve looked after a small workplace portfolio of industrial premises, prepared board reports, dealt with sales and handovers of properties, managed admin tasks and shadowed the team through the development process from the very start on a range of projects.

After a year in the office I’ve certainly got a better understanding of the property industry in general and how the development process works. Learning how the company functions as a whole has really benefitted me.

I’ve also enjoyed working in a small team which works hard to deliver great projects, where it is obvious they really care about delivering the right development and not just what generates the most money. Also, learning more about sustainability in the built environment has been one of my favourite aspects of my placement and as a result I’m planning to use this for my research project in my final year at university.

I go back to university in September to start my final year as an undergraduate and I feel completely prepared to start my job search once I’m nearing graduation, thanks to the time that’s been invested in me by the brilliant team at Blueprint.
